About Us

The railways of Scandinavia have attracted many admirers, not least for their settings in charming countries, with operations in most delightful landscapes ranging from dramatic mountains, past forests and lakes, over spectacular bridges and through rolling countryside to the famous and historic capital cities of Copenhagen, Helsinki, Oslo and Stockholm.

Each of the railways has developed its own unique engineering and design characteristics, in some cases absorbing and adapting British, German, American and other influences. This provides an extensive range of motive power and rolling stock from the earliest steam days through to modern diesel and electric times. Other operational features, including single track main lines, train ferries and curious signalling systems (to British eyes, anyway), provide an abundant fascination and interest to those who discover what Scandinavia has to offer.

The Scandinavian Railways Society was formed in 1993 for the benefit of the growing numbers of enthusiasts and modellers of Scandinavian railways who want an English language focus for their interests.

We are an informal and friendly society, and have members throughout the world, including Scandinavia. Because we are a geographically diverse group, we supplement our printed journal, Skandiapilen (named after a train of that name), with a members's forum which provides 'instant' communication of upcoming events of probable interest, Sales/Wants, meetings etc.

Society members have a wide-range of interests that cover both real and model railways. Society members regularly exhibit at model railway exhibitions and the society stand can often be found at meetings throughout the year.

As well as this website, we have a small but expanding library and photo-archive. We intend to develop other member services, including information guides and supplier discounts. The society is keen to hear if there is anything that members particularly want and active participation and contribution of all members is invited. This website is now undergoing redesign to implement improvments
